An incredible group of employees from Caterpillar UK have laced up their hiking boots and tackled the notorious 3 Peak Challenge to raise money for PASIC – Caterpillar Desford site’s charity of the year.

The team set off on Saturday 10th September on their fundraising challenge.

We spoke with one of the group, Jordan, about the experience:

3 peaks

Setting off early on Saturday morning from Desford we arrived at the foot of Ben Nevis and started our challenge at 17:03. The hike up was a tough start, but the weather was excellent and seeing the sunset over the Scottish Highlands just as we reached the peak was something special.

Making our way down in the dark under headtorch light, we got back to the minibus and headed towards Scafell Pike. A huge thank you at this point to Alex Bignell. Without his excellent driving we would not have been able to even attempt this challenge.

We arrived at the foot of Scafell Pike just after 4am and set off again in the dark; ascending mountain number two. By the time we reached the top, the sun had risen, but clouds blocked our view. So, with the clock ticking, we descended, and back into our minibus ready for our final leg.

About an hour into the drive and still in the Lake District, we heard the M6 was closed. By the time we made it to the motorway we had lost about two hours, missing the window of good weather which would enable us to climb Snowdon. With 50mph winds and driving rain forecast we took the difficult but safest decision to not attempt the last peak of the challenge.

Although we are disappointed not having completed all 3 peaks, we are very happy with our achievements in preparing for the challenge and the weekend itself. The team are still determined to complete the challenge so there is a plan to conquer Snowdon in the coming weeks. We have definitely built a strong team and helped each other through a tough mental and physical challenge, for which we can be proud.

This has been a great way to show what the Young Professionals ERG is capable of and there will be many more events like this to come!

We successfully exceeded our fundraising target and are now up to £1,831 for our fantastic site charity PASIC, thank you for every donation so far! The JustGiving page is still live for a few more weeks if you want to donate.

Finally, a massive well done to every member of the challenge team for their efforts!

Update 20/09/2022: Two of our team Caleb and Tom managed to make it up Snowdon today in a really determined effort to bring the challenge to a close. The rest of the team hopes to do the same over the coming weeks!
