Supporting families of children and young
people with cancer in the East Midlands

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic we’ve aimed to respond to the needs of the families we support.  So, when parents told us they’d like the opportunity to connect with others via Zoom in our recent Covid Support Survey, we jumped at the chance to help.

On Tuesday 9th February a group of parents whose children were post-treatment were invited to join our support workers, Joanna and Toria, for an informal, relaxed and fun Zoom session. It was a great success!

Leicester Family Support Worker, Toria said: “We know Zoom meetings can never be quite as good as a face-to-face coffee, however we think they are a great alternative for families to unite safely during what is a very isolating time for everyone.

“It also gives families from different areas within the region a chance to meet and share experiences.

The sessions are very relaxed and people are free to participate as much, or as little, as they like. Don’t worry, we won’t force you to switch your camera on if you’d rather not!”

Parents said it was lovely to have the opportunity to meet other post-treatment parents experiencing similar mixed emotions that often come at the end of treatment.

Helen attended the session and said: “Thank you for the zoom coffee morning. I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so good to speak to people with the same concerns difficulties and of course joy when talking to the small group I understand how lucky I am with Jason. I could see distress and heartache parents are going through, I realise that sometimes we forget how difficult and how amazing they are, hopefully we will meet again at another coffee morning. Thank you again.”

Following the success of this first meeting, we will be offering more group Zoom sessions, to families both on, and off, treatment. So keep your eyes peeled for the chance to sign up.

As well as group gatherings, we are also able to provide 1-on-1 Zoom sessions to individual families. If this is something you feel you would benefit from please speak to your Family Support Worker and we’ll do our best to arrange a session at a time to suit you.
